Tips and Hints for Selling Gold

scrap gold buyerIn these tough economic times, everyone could use a little extra cash, and with gold prices at an all-time high (approximately $1000 an ounce), there is no better time than now to start selling some of your scrap gold for cash.

But who has gold just lying around the house, right? Well, it may not seem obvious at first but chances are you do! Whether it’s damaged jewelry, tangled necklaces, an old gold watch, a brooch, coins or even scrap dental gold- your gold is worth money, so instead of keeping it in a drawer collecting dust, why not sell your gold and you put some extra cash in your pocket.

But before you bring any of your gold items to the gold dealer’s counter it is important for you to know how much it’s worth, so you get exactly what you are owed and not taken advantage of. Following are some tips and hints you should know about selling gold and to help you determine the value of yours.

1) Determine the karat fitness (i.e 10k, 14k, 18k, 24k). It should be indicated somewhere on the piece itself. Use a microscope in case it’s too small to see.
2) Determine the weight of the gold in grams with a gram scale
3) Know the price of today’s gold. You can determine exactly the value of your gold if you know the karat fitness, weight and the price of gold on the market. Divide the karat by 24 (pure gold), then multiply that number by today’s gold price per gram
4) Remove any gemstones or anything of value from the gold
5) Choose your gold dealer wisely; there are plenty of buyers ready to jump on the chance to buy so make sure you get your gold’s worth
6) Keep records and copies of any details regarding the gold so you can compare offers and choose the best
7) Take a photo of whatever piece(s) you are selling
8) Expect dealers to buy your gold for about 10 to 20 percent less than what it’s worth as they have to process it and of course turn a profit

So instead of letting your unused jewelry sit around collecting dust, trade them in and put some dollars in your pockets.
